Stampin Up Softly Sophisticated & A Faux-Fabric Technique

Sharing is caring!

Do you love new ideas for using the products you already have in your collection? Today I’m sharing a technique for using embossing folders with ink to create some amazing results! I used the Stampin Up Softly Sophisticated bundle, because it’s one of our free reward items now available during Sale-a-bration, but you can substitute any embossing folder in your collection. Let’s take a look at this faux-fabric technique!

How To Create The Faux-Fabric Technique

Begin by applying ink to one side of your embossing folder. You can use a brayer, blending brushes, or apply the ink directly with the ink pad.

Carefully lay paper onto the un-inked side of the embossing folder.

Lift the inked side of the folder and close it.

Run the folder through your embossing machine.

Remove the paper and be amazed!

Sample Cards

Let’s take a look at the samples I created. As mentioned, I used the embossing folder from the Softly Sophisticated bundle, which is available free right now with a $100 purchase.

Inking The Raised Side Of The Embossing Folder

For this first card, I applied Pebbled Path ink to the raised dots side of the embossing folder and ran it through with a piece of Softly Stippled designer paper, another Sale-a-bration reward item.

Inking The Flat Side Of The Embossing Folder

For this one I applied Pool Party to the flat side of the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder, and again used a piece of Softly Stippled designer paper.

To create this lovely bird card, I did the same technique as above on a piece of Flight & Airy designer paper.

Blending Colors

For this one I used plain white cardstock, but I applied two different colors of ink to the folder – Shaded Spruce and Lemon Lime Twist.

This next card doesn’t use today’s technique, but it’s another fun use for the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder – honeycomb! I love the Bee My Valentine bundle, and this embossing folder is perfect to use with it.

Using Blending Brushes

Now let’s look at a different embossing folder called Layered Florals. This one is so pretty! For this first card, I used blending brushes to apply Fresh Freesia and Boho Blue inks to the raised flowers on the folder.

More Brayering

My daughter created this gorgeous card below! I helped her apply Tahitian Tide and Starry Sky inks to the flat side of the embossing folder. After we ran it through the machine, she used water painters to apply several colors of ink to ‘paint’ the flowers. Isn’t it gorgeous?!

Alternative Ideas

Here’s another technique to try! Rather than cover the entire embossing folder with ink, try stamping onto the embossing folder. For the cards below, I used stamps from the Hooray For Surprises stamp set to stamp repeatedly on the embossing folder.

This technique works best with stamps that have mostly solid coverage (compared to an outline stamp), which is why I chose this stamp set. I used the flower stamp for the card shown below.
